Except when you do this for a file, when you move the “alias” to another folder or drive it looses it’s target. So you have to manually redirect the target. Or at least this is what happened to me on a couple days ago. Took me 15-20 min to make 8 shortcuts.

Why does Apple have to make things so difficult..

This worked great for a document in the ICloud. Thanks for the help.

This did not create a shortcut, it copied the file. I attempted to send a shortcut to a co-worker and ended up with a 240 MB file on the message. Not helpful.

An alias is not a shortcut. With a Windows shortcut, you can set the program’s working directory and pass arguments to it. For example, I want to launch the command:

    /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin –profilemanager

How can I do this using an alias?

I was hoping to make a short cut on a shell script I can click on and it will start up.

Turns out, one can simply change the postfix to .command and it will work. For example:

    cp run.sh run.command

make sure the shell script’s first line details which parser to use.

Then from the finder, one can simply navigate to the run.command script and double click it. Terminal will start up and start running the script.

@Peter: Ok the files in the System directory are protected…
    There’s a way anyway:

Create a new folder on the desktop.
Make an alias of this folder as described in this article.
Throw the (empty) folder away. Empty the trash.
    Open the Alias.
Naturally the alias won’t find the folder.
A window pops up. Click on “Fix alias…”
You are asked for a new file to link the alias to.
Select the file you want (in your case: System/Library/CoreServices/Screen Sharing.app)
    The alias works now.

  21. Peter says:

What if there is no “Make Alias” option in the right click menu, and “Make Alias” in the File menu is grayed out?

    I want to make an alias to System/Library/CoreServices/Screen Sharing.app, but I can’t…

  22. Aziz says:

Its the same thing. Highlight the folder and right click. click alias and drag the alias whereever. It works like a charm THANKS DUDE!
